Biography

Marcus Venables

Marcus is a Canadian musician, composer, conductor, and educator from Toronto. A graduate of the University of Toronto in Trumpet Performance, Marcus has become a sought-after soloist, conductor, and composer. He has received numerous commissions from ensembles around the world and has been recognized through several composition competitions.

Marcus began his musical journey through The Salvation Army and currently serves as Principal Cornet of the Canadian Staff Band. As a soloist and conductor, he has travelled extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia. In June 2016, he appeared as a featured soloist with the International Staff Band at Birmingham Symphony Hall in the United Kingdom.

As a composer, Marcus has received numerous awards, including the 2011 UniBrass Composition Prize for Lord of My Youth, the 2013 Just Music Composition Competition for Concerto for Brass Band, and the 2019 Cory Band Composition Competition for Colossus, among others. His music is published internationally and is regularly performed by brass bands, church ensembles, and instrumental groups.

In addition to his musical activities, Marcus serves as Assistant Territorial Music and Arts Ministries Secretary for The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory. He is also Bandmaster of the Yorkminster Citadel Band and Solidarity Brass, the Ontario Division's regional youth brass band.

Marcus, his wife Alexandria, and their son Freddie attend Yorkminster Citadel in Toronto.
